Growing Together: Reepham High School’s Eco-Classroom
At Reepham High School & College, the allotment has become a well-used space for learning and discovery. It gives students the chance to connect with nature, explore science in action, and take part in hands-on projects. Thanks to support from The Clan Trust, this outdoor classroom is now set to become even more valuable with the addition of a purpose-built eco-classroom.
The allotment sits on the edge of the school’s large grounds - a five-minute walk from the main buildings. While it has been a much loved part of school life, the distance and lack of shelter have often meant lessons were cut short by rain or avoided in colder months.
Kate, a science teacher and the school’s allotment project lead, explained:
“Our allotment is a fantastic space for learning, but it’s very exposed to the weather. Having an eco-classroom down there will give us a proper base - somewhere to gather, plan lessons, leave equipment, and shelter from rain or sun. It will make the space usable for so many more students and subjects.”
The eco-classroom project began just before COVID, when the base was installed. After long delays, work resumed in 2022 with donated timber and flooring. The next stage is a roof - and this is where The Clan Trust’s grant has made a crucial difference.
“Most of the materials so far have been donated locally, but the roofing was something we couldn’t source ourselves,” Kate said. “The Clan Trust’s support has been absolutely crucial - it means all the work already done is protected, and the project can finally be completed.”
Students from across the school are already engaged in the project. Sixth formers use the allotment every week and have helped with building tasks, while younger pupils enjoy the orchard and meadow areas. With the eco-classroom in place, more teachers will be able to build it into their lessons, making outdoor learning a regular part of the timetable.
The project is also bringing the wider community together. Local volunteers regularly support the allotment, and the school hopes the new classroom will enable more events - from apple-picking evenings to music sessions - strengthening ties between the school and local residents.
With the roof set to go on over the coming months and a spring launch planned, the eco-classroom promises to be a lasting legacy - giving students and the community a sheltered space to learn, create and grow together.
The Clan Trust is proud to play a part in helping Reepham High School bring this project to life. Supporting opportunities that inspire young people, strengthen communities, and make the most of Norfolk’s rural spaces is at the heart of what we do - and we are delighted to see the eco-classroom taking shape. We look forward to watching it grow into a space that will benefit students and the community for many years to come.
